I am new to NDT. Do I need to get experience before I attend a NDT course?

No, experience can be gained either before or after training and examination. It is generally better to come on a course with some previous knowledge in the application, but in line with scheme documents, it is not essential.

I would like a career in NDT. Where do I start?

We normally recommend the Appreciation of NDT Techniques course. This will show you:
  • How to appreciate the available methods
  • How to explain the basic principles of these methods
  • How to identify the advantages and disadvantages of these, both in application and defect detection capability
  • How to carry out basic hands-on applications for familiarisation purposes
Then we would suggest you attend the Penetrant Testing and Magnetic Particle Testing courses - they are the normal starting point for a career in NDT. These are the methods for detecting surface breaking defects and are used extensively to supplement radiography and ultrasonics, which are used to detect sub-surface defects. They have the advantage of having the shortest duration courses with the shortest experience duration needed which must be gained before full certification can be awarded. This is the fastest route to becoming a Level 2 NDT Inspector. Also, the number of NDT tickets you hold can reduce the experience requirements needed for attending future NDT courses.

Below are some of the websites carrying NDT job advertisements:
www.ndtcabin.com
www.ndt.net
www.bindt.org

If you are looking for reference material about NDT, www.ndt-ed.org is a good reference website.

I am thinking about taking NDT training. Where can I find information on the level and type of knowledge that I will be expected to learn during the training courses?

A good source of NDT training information for all of the standard NDT methods can be found at www.ndt-ed.org and using the Quick Link to NDT Course Material. It has been developed for college students and provides an excellent overview of the theoretical aspects of the main NDT courses, along with some self-test quizzes.

Where can I find information about the CSWIP or PCN scheme requirements, e.g. for training hours, experience, exam requirements, etc.?

CSWIP and PCN put their respective scheme requirements onto their respective websites. The documents, available to all, contain all the requirements to gain NDT certification in all the methods at all levels. They give important information on training requirements, experience duration, exams and recertification. They can be found at:

CSWIP
PCN General
PCN Aerospace

What exemptions am I eligible for if I hold other NDT qualifications?

This will depend on what the qualifications are. Exemptions are available against training and/or exams if the previous was to EN 473 and/or ISO 9712. Customers are requested to submit any evidence of previous training and exams when making enquiries about exemptions.
Please note that for Radiographic Interpretation, having previous experience in reading radiographs or holding a Senior Welding Inspector ticket, does not always prepare people for the Radiographic Interpretation examination which requires knowledge of Radiographic Testing theory. This is stated on the website.
