More than 250 visitors from regional organisations, universities and a range of industry sectors attended a recent TWI Technology Day in Shah Alam – the first event open to the public at TWI’s new state-of-the art facilities in Malaysia.

The Technology Day was an opportunity to present TWI capabilities and expertise to the South East Asia region in order to raise awareness, create links between companies, and bring industry closer together.

A collaboration between TWI Malaysia, Lincoln Electric, Olympus Singapore (OSP) and Blue Water Engineering, the technical programme for the event covered advanced non-destructive testing and welding, with practical demonstrations on the latest developments in automated welding and wet welding, and displays featuring painting and coating equipment.

TWI South East Asia’s Dietmar Kok spent the day briefing and demonstrating Teletest® to visitors, who were excited to see long-range ultrasonic testing equipment in action and learn about its application in inspection of corrosion in pipelines.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Inspection of aluminothermic rail welds, together with demonstration of the equipment was carried out by John Rudlin from TWI’s headquarters in Cambridge, UK. He also presented PolyTest™ for non-destructive evaluation of welded joints in polyethylene pipes.

Slim Soua, also from TWI’s Cambridge base, gave presentations on Teletest® and its applications in the inspection of pipelines, vibration monitoring and as a risk analysis system for process piping (VARA) and AE HIC: Acoustic Emission System Development for HIC Monitoring.

Mr. Yong Kwok Leong from Olympus Singapore presented the latest version of the company’s phased array and eddy current array equipment and Richard Lane from Lincoln Electric led a session on implementation, and control and verification of welding processes with the latest technologies.

Attendees also learned about TWI’s Virtual Academy and the possibility of studying phased array, time-of-flight diffraction (ToFD) and ultrasonic testing on a blended learning basis which provides more flexibility.

TWI Technology (S.E. Asia) is proud to train more than 7000 students a year regionally who benefit from a comprehensive programme of industrial training and development. Training and certification programmes include NDT training, welding inspection, plant inspection, quality control, underwater inspection, practical welding health and safety.
