TWI’s work to support young welders in Malaysia has been recognised with the
award of a Certificate of Appreciation from the Malaysian Ministry of Human Resources.
Welding experts from TWI South East Asia’s (TWI SEA’s) main office in
Shah Alam, Malaysia, have played a leading role in selecting young welders to participate
in national, regional and international skills competitions.
TWI SEA was awarded the certificate from the Malaysian government to say thank you
for its work in preparing a team of welders to participate in the WorldSkills São
Paulo 2015 competition, which took place in August.
Preparations are already underway for the next international competition, which
will take place in Abu Dhabi in 2017. The selection process begins with a national
competition organised by TWI SEA: WorldSkills Malaysia Belia 2015, which took place
earlier this month.
Mohammad Darus Taib, general manager at TWI SEA, was on the judging panel as the
country welding expert. His colleague Abdul Latif Ibrahim took part as the country’s
The top two entrants will receive additional training from TWI SEA before progressing
on to a regional heat open to ASEAN countries, which will take place in Kuala Lumpur
next year. The Malaysian candidate who comes out on top in that contest will return
to TWI SEA for a final programme of training before representing his or her country
at WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.
Malaysia won a Medal of Excellence for welding at the 2015 WorldSkills contest. The
Malaysian deputy prime minister is keen to see government departments and training
organisations work together to improve on that result at the next competition, and
TWI SEA is proud to be able to play a key role in that effort.
