IIW/EWF Welding Diploma - Routes to Qualification

Standard route

In this route, awarding of a diploma is subject to completing all the modules and passed exams for any given level. For example, specialist level must complete six courses, and engineer level must complete all fourteen courses.

Alternative route

This alternative allows those who have gained knowledge and can demonstrate their capability in all respects, as required by the guideline, to proceed through a quicker process without necessarily attending the training courses. There is flexibility in the alternative route. For example, a candidate who can demonstrate knowledge and capability covering part o the syllabus may be able to gain exemption from those parts of the course. In all cases, however, the full examinations are required.

It should be stressed that the alternative route is not "easier" than the standard (attendance of the full course). The alternative route involves the following stages

• Detailed assessment of validated CV,
• Professional assessment interview,
• Project or technical interview
• Taking and passing exams for all four modules

If unsuccessful in any of these stages, at the discretion of the ANB, the applicant can be re-directed to the standard route OR to take one or more of the modules for the level applied. In any case, all four modules exams must be taken and passed before the diploma can be granted. Experience has shown that many candidates actually find the standard route easier. Access requirements

Please note that access requirements stated below are related to UK education scheme. For overseas candidates equivalent qualifications are requested. In all cases, a CV must be forwarded for assessment purposes.

Standard route

Specialist level:

• Approved craft diploma in engineering subjects, for example City and Guilds of London Institute, OR
• Level 2/3 National or Scottish Vocational Qualifications or other nationally recognised vocations qualifications in engineering subjects.

Technologist level

• Higher national certificate (HNC) in an engineering discipline OR
• Professional engineer of incorporated engineer (IEng) status granted by the UK Engineering Council under mature candidate rules, OR
• Level 4 National or Scottish Vocational Qualifications or other nationally recognised vocations qualifications in engineering subjects.

Engineering level

• University degree in an engineering discipline, OR
• Professional engineer of chartered engineer (CEng) status granted by the UK Engineering Council, OR
• Professional engineer of incorporated engineer (IEng) status, granted by the UK Engineering council, including as HNC or higher national diploma (HND) in an engineering discipline.

Alternative route

Specialist level
In addition to those required for the standard route:

• Min. 3 years job function in welding at technologist level (in the last six year period).
• Justification of candidate's experience, training and education to become IWS (may include other tests results).
• Pass a CV pre-assessment by TWI.
• Fill in application form.

Technologist level
In addition to those required for the standard route:

• Min. 4 years job function in welding at specialist level (in the last six year period).
• Justification of candidate's experience, training and education to become IWT (may include other tests results).
• Pass a CV pre-assessment by TWI.
• Fill in application form.

Engineering level
In addition to those required for the standard route:

• Min. 4 years job function in welding at engineering level (in the last six year period).
• Justification of candidate's experience, training and education to become IWE (may include other tests results).
• Pass a CV pre-assessment by TWI.
