Is it for me?

Production engineers, welding supervisors, QA/QC personnel and inspection staff.

What will I learn?

This course covers the influence of alloying elements, properties of welded joints, weldability of steels - mild and low alloy, and the use of carbon equivalent formulae. You will also be taught about metallurgical defects, cracking mechanisms and control, effects of preheat and/or post-weld heat treatment, and choosing the appropriate filler material.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the role of metallurgy in welding technology
  • Appreciate the effect of alloying elements on carbon steel properties
  • Identify weldability problems in typical carbon and low alloy steels
  • Understand the causes and significance of metallurgical defects in welds
  • Appreciate requirements of preheat and post-weld heat treatment procedures
