Is it for me?

Engineering staff involved with design, specification, fabrication, inspection or application of stainless steel materials.

What will I learn?

This course covers basic metallurgy and properties of stainless steel, corrosion and oxidation resistance, weldability of highly corrosion resistant grades (duplex, super duplex and high alloy austenitics), and weldability of conventional stainless steels (austenitic, ferritic and martensitic). You will also be taught about the avoidance of weld defects, use of a Schaeffler diagram for dissimilar joints, measurements of ferrite levels and ferrite number (FN), weld overlaying and welding clad steels. The training wil also tell you about the degradation of stainless steels (pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking), and practical considerations for welding stainless steels.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Appreciate the influence of composition on stainless steel properties
  • Understand various weldability problems of different grades
  • Identify welding conditions necessary to achieve optimum weld area corrosion resistance
  • Recognise how stainless steel corrosion resistance can be degraded
  • Apply knowledge to welding of dissimilar joints and weld overlays
  • Appreciate practical implications of welding stainless steels
