Navigating the CSWIP 3.3U Certification

CSWIP 3.3U - ROV Inspector

CSWIP 3.3U is a certification for underwater inspectors, often used in the offshore industry, including for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). It signifies competency in inspecting and evaluating underwater structures and equipment, including those inspected using ROVs. It’s a valuable qualification for professionals working in marine engineering, offshore construction, and related fields.

IS IT FOR ME?

If you are interested in working as an underwater inspector, particularly with ROVs, then obtaining the CSWIP 3.3U certification could be a great fit for you. It would provide you with the necessary skills and credentials to excel in that field. However, it’s important to consider your career goals and whether this certification aligns with them before pursuing.

To be eligible for the CSWIP 3.3U certification, candidates must meet one of the following specifications:

  1. Submersible Pilot or Observer: Completed a minimum of 15 operational dives or have logged a minimum of 100 hours of underwater inspection work as a pilot or observer of remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Alternatively, hold a qualification in a relevant engineering or science subject at a minimum of HNC level or equivalent, with at least 12 months of subsea engineering-related work experience, including a minimum of 60 days spent of an offshore site.
  1. CSWIP 3.1U OR 3.2U Diver Inspector: Hold current or previous certifications as a CSWIP 3.1U or 3.2U diver inspector for a minimum of three years, with at least 100 logged hours of underwater inspection work.
  2. Surface Practitioner: Hold certification in ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, or penetrant testing under CSWIP, PCN, or equivalent approval accepted by the CSWIP In-Service Inspection Management Committee, with a minimum of three years of documented experience in applying non-destructive testing (NDT) methods related to off-shore facilities. Additionally, have spent a minimum of 30 days at an offshore work site gaining familiarity with underwater techniques.

Additionally, candidates have an option to enrol in the CSWIP 3.3U online course, which is delivered in two parts, covering both theoretical and practical elements of underwater inspection. This online course allows candidates to study at their own pace and convenience, reducing the need for physical attendance at a TWI Training Centre. However, candidates are still required to attend a TWI Training Centre to sit for the CSWIP examination and complete the certification process.
