NDT Appreciation Workshop at TWI Malaysia

A group of senior mechanical engineering students from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) attended a workshop at TWI Technology (Malaysia) to learn about the conventional methods of non-destructive testing (NDT) as well as the practical application of NDT techniques in the industry.

After getting a tour of TWI Malaysia's facilities, students were given a health and safety presentation and were briefed on emergency evacuation procedures in case of an incident.

The NDT appreciation workshop started with a demonstration of penetrant testing, which was followed by a presentation and practice on magnetic particle testing (MT). After MT and PT, NDT lecturer Irfan Farhan gave an introduction to radiographic testing and as well as a demonstration on the interpretation of radiographs taken from the welded joints. Students were then taken through the application of ultrasonic testing (UT) and the advanced method of phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT).

Participants found the workshop interesting and the opportunity to get hands-on experience of practicing various NDT techniques worthwhile.

What we learn at university is very theoretical and we have to rely on just images and examples in our text book while, on the workshop, we got to see the actual application of these NDT methods on real metal and observe defects first hand.

The workshop ended with a question and answer session where students got to discuss some of the topics covered in their course with TWI lecturers and seek advice on their studies and future career paths.
