TWI Malaysia conducts Fitness-for-Service (FFS) Assessment training, based on API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 2016

Ian Partridge, who has been with TWI for many years, conducted the Plant Inspector Level 2 - Fitness-for-Service (FFS) Assessment for a group of more than 20 engineers from various companies and TWI Services.

The course, which was held on 2 – 4 October, has been developed based around the new API/ASME combined standard, which has been expanded to address material damage mechanisms other than just those commonly found in refining industry equipment. Fitness-for-service assessments evaluate the structural integrity of components and their suitability for continuous service.

Plant, non-destructive testing, and materials and corrosion engineers can benefit from this course by learning the application of the latest FFS technologies for making repair, replace, re-rate and redesign decisions for process equipment, pipelines, boilers and storage tanks . By the end of this course, they would also be able to understand the information requirements for performing FFS assessments for brittle fracture, general metal loss, localised metal loss, pitting, laminations, weld misalignment and shell distortion, crack-like flaws, creep, fire damage, hydrogen blisters, hydrogen damage associated with HIC/SOHIC, dents and gouges.

Candidates were impressed with the quality of the course and the facilities of TWI Malaysia and reported successful and beneficial training.
