TWI has been selected by the Environment Agency to deliver training to the members
of its staff responsible for checking the integrity of geomembrane linings and pipes
at landfill sites.
To meet the demand, TWI is introducing a new course: ‘Welding of Geomembranes and
Pipes for CQA Engineers’. Designed specifically for Environment Agency inspectors
and construction quality assurance (CQA) engineers, this one-day course will provide
attendees with an understanding of HDPE (high-density polyethylene) geomembranes
and pipes, and the techniques used to join them.
The consequences of a landfill geomembrane failing and allowing toxic chemicals
and leachate to leak into the local environment could be catastrophic, so it is
imperative that they are inspected and quality-assured. To be able to do this effectively,
inspectors and CQA engineers need a good knowledge of the processes involved in
constructing a landfill geomembrane.
Many of the engineers and technicians responsible for fabricating geomembrane linings
will have completed TWI’s ‘Lining Membrane Welding’ course – the only programme
of its type in the world that leads to internationally recognised CSWIP certification.
TWI has now adapted this course to make it suitable for personnel inspecting these
engineers’ and technicians’ work.
The course will cover relevant accreditation schemes, an introduction to plastics
materials, principles of plastics welding, theory of geomembrane and pipe welding,
and good and bad working practices. It will also feature a practical demonstration
and workshop, providing an opportunity to get hands-on experience of geomembrane
