TWI training expert travels to Brazil to provide training support to industry

Senior Welding Inspection Lecturer Darren Jefferies travelled to Brazil earlier this year to give presentations to senior technical personnel at two major industrial organisations.

TWI's lecturer travelled to Rio Grande do Sul in the south of the country and Ipatinga in the south-east, on a trip supported by the British Embassy in Brazil with the intention of supporting the country’s shipbuilding and metals industries.

In Rio Grande do Sul Darren visited APL, an organisation representing ship building industry, where he delivered an in-depth technical presentation to a broad mix of delegates – not just engineers from within APL, but also visiting instructors from universities and other educational establishments. A translator ensured that the session was well understood by all in attendance. The audience was particularly interested in the role of European welding standards.

While in Rio Grande do Sul, Darren was given a tour of the region’s shipyards. Improvements in its engineers’ understanding of welding and associated technologies could have a big impact on its business.

From Rio Grande do Sul Darren flew to Ipatinga. Here he visited the premises of FIEMG, a governmental industry association offering training and other support to Brazilian companies, and delivered his presentation to a group of senior engineers and technicians.

It was the TWI lecturer’s first trip to Brazil but, given its success, it is unlikely to be his last. Alongside an opportunity to meet senior figures from Brazilian industry and tour a working shipyard, Darren was able to sample the local culture – the ‘churrasco’ grilled meat in Rio Grande do Sul being a particular highlight.

Dr. Marcus Jones, Global Manager for strategy and development of training said “ We are very pleased to support industry all around the world with training and shared knowledge to make a step change improvement in safety, integrity, and technical performance.”
