Is it for me?

This course is ideal if you are looking to expand your current knowledge of radiographic systems and/or are looking at the possibility of introducing a digital system into your place of work/company.

What will I learn?

This course teaches the principles of digital radiography, equipment standards for CR systems, radiographic techniques with CR, and calibration of equipment (use of phantom). You will also learn about image processing using phosphor screens, software specific parameters, calibration of measuring tools, effects of magnification, and definition of accuracy constraints and capabilities of CR system. The course also covers modification of image, use of analysis software, and acceptance and reporting.

The training is in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and ends with the certification exam.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the theoretical background of digital radiography
  • Explain current standards with reference to CR systems (BS EN 14784)
  • Calibrate a CR system using a phantom
  • Explain the image processing of phosphor screens
  • Use software specific parameters to assess a digital image
  • Recognise the constraints and capabilities of a CR system
  • Modify the digital image to optimise defect detection
  • Compile a written instruction
  • Meet the syllabus requirements of E10.2 training and examinations PCN syllabus

What else should I know?

Course candidates must be qualified to a minimum of Level 1 or 2 Radiographic Testing or Interpretation conforming to BS EN ISO 9712.

Please note:
All candidates attending a examination (initial, retest or renewal) must provide photo ID (e.g Driving licence number, Passport number, PCN ID Card) on the day of sitting the examination. Failure to do so will result in the candidate being turned away.

PCN or CSWIP Level 2 DRT (Weld, Casting or Profile/Tangential) certification will be offered.

Digitised Radiographic Testing (DRT):
The minimum required duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is:
  • Level 1 - 12 hours
  • Level 2 - 24 hours (Direct Level 2 -36 hours)

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is:
  • Level 1 - 1 month
  • Level 2 - 3 months (Direct Level 2 - 4 months)
ISO 9712:2022, the standard to which the PCN Scheme operates with respect to NDT certification, now requires that all candidates demonstrate a prior understanding of materials and processes, also known as 'product technology', before undertaking training in any method in order to supplement their knowledge of the specific methods and techniques to which they are seeking certification.
To meet this requirement, BINDT developed the Product Technology training course to help PCN candidates achieve the required materials and processes knowledge in an affordable and convenient way and at a time and pace that suits them.
The course is mandatory for all new PCN candidates https://www.bindt.org/Certification/product-technology-online-training/

Important Note: Whilst not a formal prerequisite, it is highly recommended that candidates have some prior industrial exposure to the method itself as well as to the sector that they will be attempting (e.g. welds). Where this is not possible, candidates are advised to thoroughly review the course notes and complete the relevant product technology e-learning (and methods e-learning where this is available) prior to attending the classroom training.

This preparation will significantly ease their study during the classroom sessions and improve their chances of successfully passing the examinations.
