Build Magnetic Particle Testing Skills with TWI Training

TWI Training and Examination Services’ BGAS-CSWIP Magnetic Particle Inspector Blended Learning course combines flexible online study with practical classroom training and certification, giving candidates the opportunity to develop their theoretical knowledge before putting it into practice.

Magnetic particle testing is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method for identifying surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. This course is specifically developed for NDT personnel, inspectors and technicians involved in weld inspection, castings, forgings or in-service inspection, developing a strong understanding of the method is an important part of the effective inspection practice.

Learn the theory at your own pace

The blended learning approach allows candidates to complete the online element when and where it suits them. The eLearning covers both product technology and magnetic testing theory, providing a foundation in areas including steel metallurgy, manufacturing processes, common discontinuities and defects, the principles of magnetic particle testing, magnetisation methods, detecting media, equipment, testing techniques and assessment of magnetising force.

Candidates have access to downloadable course notes, self-assessment questionnaires and coursework, with a personal tutor assigned to support them during their studies.

The online element is designed to prepare candidates for the practical training that follows, with coursework results helping indicate whether they are ready to progress to the classroom stage.

Online learning to practical inspection

Following the online training, candidates attend two days of practical classroom training, where they can develop their ability to apply magnetic particle testing techniques in practice. The course then concludes with the certification examination at a TWI training facility.

Training is delivered in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712, with the course designed to meet the relevant syllabus requirements for CSWIP and PCN.

By the end of the training, candidates should be able to explain the principles of magnetic particle inspection, carry out magnetic particle inspection and produce clear inspection instructions and test reports.

Upcoming course in Middlesbrough

The next BGAS-CSWIP Magnetic Particle Inspector Blended Learning course will take place at TWI Middlesbrough from 14–16 September 2026.

With the flexibility of online preparation combined with dedicated practical training and examination, the blended learning route provides a practical way for professionals to build their magnetic particle testing knowledge while managing their learning around existing commitments.
