Develop Advanced PAUT Skills with TWI in Middlesbrough

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced non-destructive testing technique that can provide detailed information about the condition of welded components while producing recorded inspection data for further analysis.

This month, at TWI Training and Examination Services is delivering its Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) course in Middlesbrough, with candidates undertaking a comprehensive programme from 14 September to 2 October 2026. This course is designed for experienced, Level 2 ultrasonic technicians, looking to expand their knowledge and gain a qualification in PAUT, from the 15-day programme that combines theory, practical data acquisition, data analysis, and examination.

Working from PAUT Principles to Practical Inspection

Unlike conventional ultrasonic testing, PAUT uses probes with multiple elements that can be pulsed individually at different time intervals. This allows inspectors to control and steer the ultrasonic beam and can provide 2D or 3D representations of inspection data, alongside a permanent digital record of the examination. During the on-going course in TWI Middlesbrough premises, candidates develop their understanding of the principles behind phased array inspection, including phased array probes, inspection sensitivity, and the operation of phased array instruments.

Practical training covers scanning with phased array probes, calibration and equipment checks, data collection and the use of software for data analysis. Delegates also learn how software tools can support defect detection and sizing, verify the existence and position of flaws, and contribute to accurate inspection reporting. The programme includes equipment such as Olympus Omniscan, TD Focus Scan, Sonatest Harfang, Zetec Topaz and M2M Gekko, with equipment availability dependent on the specific course event.

A key part of PAUT inspection is not simply acquiring data but also being able to interpret them accurately as well. PAUT not only helps one with developing inspection skills, but it also helps with analysis skills. Candidates work through practical data analysis and develop the ability to locate and evaluate flaws in weld bodies, heat-affected zones and parent metal laminations. The course also covers the differentiation of defects from geometric features and the analysis of scan data to assess the location and size of indications in typical welded butt joints.

By the end of the programme, candidates should be able to select suitable probes and wedges, calibrate and set up PAUT equipment, analyse inspection data and accurately report weld condition. They also develop the ability to compile written inspection instructions. The course is delivered in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and ends with the relevant certification examination. It can lead to internationally recognised CSWIP or PCN certification, subject to meeting the applicable certification requirements.

Building on Existing Ultrasonic Testing Experience

The PAUT package is intended for experienced ultrasonic technicians and has specific entry requirements. PCN candidates must hold a minimum of BS EN ISO 9712 Level 2 Ultrasonic Testing, while CSWIP candidates should hold BS EN ISO 9712 certification in Ultrasonic Testing. CSWIP certification may also be available to candidates holding ASNT UT Welds certification, subject to individual consideration and the relevant evidence of training and experience. The programme itself is structured over 15 days, comprising 10 days of phased array theory and data acquisition practical training, three days of analysis practical training and two days of examination. Candidates with previous PAUT training may also be eligible for a reduction in the training hours required for CSWIP or PCN certification, subject to the relevant evidence and approval.

For professionals who cannot commit to the full classroom programme, TWI also offers a blended learning route, allowing theory and concepts to be studied through eLearning before attending classroom sessions for practical training.

As the current Middlesbrough programme continues through to 2 October, candidates are developing the specialist knowledge and practical skills required to apply PAUT to welded components and progress their capabilities within advanced NDT.

Note: The course is delivered in accordance with BS EN ISO 9712 and includes the certification examination, leading to internationally recognised CSWIP or PCN certification, subject to meeting the relevant certification requirements. This distinction matters because attending the course does not by itself guarantee certification; the candidate must meet the applicable entry, training/experience and examination requirements.
