Candidates explore surface preparation methods and standards, methods for identifying contaminants, coating technology and film thickness, as well as a range of coating and protection systems. The syllabus includes coal tar enamels, hot and cold applied tapes, grease-based tapes, self-adhesive overwrap tapes, polyethylene cladding, fillers, mastics and putties, heat-shrinkable plastics, powder coatings and urethane MCLs. The course also covers concrete and internal coatings, cathodic protection and the different stages of pipeline construction. Handling, transport and storage, pipeline surveys, health and safety, coating faults and quality practices are included as well.
This broad coverage is designed to help candidates understand not only the coating systems themselves, but also the conditions and practical considerations that can affect their performance.
From surface preparation to inspection and standards
For a Site Coatings Inspector, understanding how coatings are applied is only part of the role. Inspection also requires an understanding of testing methods, specifications and the standards against which work is assessed.
