Develop Your Career in Underwater Inspection

Underwater inspection brings together specialist inspection knowledge, subsea experience and the ability to work with increasingly sophisticated inspection technologies. For professionals already working in the sector, developing those skills can open different routes through diver inspection, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) inspection and inspection control.

For example, TWI's CSWIP underwater inspection programme offers a career pathway from 3.1U and 3.2U NDT Inspection Diver through 3.3U ROV Inspector and 3.4U Underwater Inspection Controller.

From underwater NDT to inspection control

The pathway is not necessarily a single route that every professional must follow. Different CSWIP qualifications suit different backgrounds and responsibilities, with entry requirements varying between the programmes.

For commercial divers progressing from CSWIP 3.1U, 3.2U NDT Inspection Diver develops advanced underwater NDT capability. The course covers magnetic particle inspection, weld toe grinding and an overview of electro-magnetic techniques. Successful candidates gain eligibility to sit the CSWIP 3.2U examination.

3.3U ROV Inspector provides a route into remotely applied subsea inspection. The course covers areas including quality assurance, CCTV, equipment calibration, cathodic protection systems, and interpretation and recording methods, with candidates developing competence in coordinating data retrieved from ROVs.

For those moving towards a planning and coordination role, 3.4U Underwater Inspection Controller covers advanced NDT techniques, data recording and processing, quality assurance, intervention techniques, inspection planning and briefing. Candidates develop the ability to plan and coordinate subsea inspection programmes.
