Discover Metallography at TWI with Hands-On Training

Technicians, lab managers, and engineers looking to strengthen their skills in analytical techniques for quality control and failure investigation can now join the Metallography Insight course at TWI’s state-of-the-art facilities at Granta Park, Cambridge.

This immersive two-day training is tailored to professionals in engineering disciplines and is especially valuable for those with a technical background or prior exposure to metals and alloys—though no specific entry requirements apply.

Participants begin by exploring the fundamental theories and principles of lab-based metallography. The course then transitions into practical, hands-on workshops focused on real-world applications. You'll gain experience in sample preparation across various material types, using industry-standard techniques to reveal microstructures in metals, ceramics, and polymers.

A key feature of the training is understanding how each step—such as etching and sample handling—impacts results. You'll also learn how metallography and fractography contribute to root cause analysis in failure investigations.

Advanced imaging is covered in-depth, including how to capture high-quality images using stereomicroscopes and compound microscopes, along with tips for digital enhancement. The course includes quantitative image analysis, as well as demonstrations on fixed equipment for hardness testing and ferrite percentage measurements.

TWI’s expert instructors will also walk you through efficient lab setup and safe practice, including HSE guidelines, layout planning, and time-saving techniques—all designed to maximise sample throughput without compromising quality.

For teams, bespoke versions of this course can be arranged for six or more participants, with content tailored to specific material families.

Whether you’re looking to sharpen your lab skills or gain a deeper insight into failure mechanisms, Metallography Insight offers a practical route to achieving excellence in material analysis.
