Focused Visual Testing Training Week in Middlesbrough

As the week draws to a close, TWI Training’s Visual Testing (VT) package in Middlesbrough is entering its final stages, with delegates completing the programme on 1 May 2026.

Running from 27 April, this delivery has brought together a small group of five professionals, creating an environment that supports detailed discussion, practical engagement and a more personalised learning experience.

Why Visual Testing Still Matters

Often seen as the starting point within non-destructive testing, visual inspection remains one of the most critical methods used across industry. Before any advanced techniques are applied, it is visual testing that provides the first indication of weld quality and potential defects.

Throughout the course, participants explore how to:

  • Recognise and assess surface imperfections
  • Apply inspection techniques effectively in real scenarios
  • Work in line with industry standards and acceptance criteria
  • Use appropriate tools to support accurate inspection outcomes

Rather than focusing purely on theory, the training emphasises how these principles translate directly into day-to-day inspection tasks.

Learning Through Application

Led by lecturer Ewan Metcalfe, the course combines guided instruction with practical exercises that reflect real inspection challenges. Delegates are encouraged to actively engage with the material, building confidence in identifying defects and making informed judgements.

With a smaller cohort, the sessions naturally allow for more interaction, enabling candidates to explore specific questions, share experiences and benefit from direct input throughout the training.

A Stepping Stone in NDT Careers

For many, visual testing is not just a standalone skill but a foundation for further career progression within the field of non-destructive testing. Whether you are supporting welding inspection roles or forming part of a broader certification pathway, Visual Testing (VT) knowledge remains an essential pillar.

The course is particularly relevant for those working in fabrication, inspection and maintenance roles, where accurate visual assessment underpins quality and safety.

Further deliveries of the Visual Testing package are scheduled to take place in Middlesbrough later this year, with upcoming dates in July, September and November.

For those of you considering developing their inspection capabilities, you can see full details and booking information on the dedicated webpage.

By maintaining a strong focus on practical understanding and real-world application, TWI Training continues to deliver programmes that reflect the needs of industry, ensuring delegates leave not only with knowledge, but with the ability to apply it in the real world.
