Growing Demand for Plastic Welding Inspection at TWI
Demand for plastic welding inspection training is growing significantly, with TWI Training and Examination Services seeing a substantial increase in bookings for our course that bridges welding inspection knowledge into plastic pipe inspection.
In the past 12 months, we have seen bookings for the CSWIP Welding Inspector to CSWIP Plastic Welding Inspector course increase tenfold, reflecting the growing interest in developing inspection capability for plastic pipe systems and demonstrating the increased need for qualified personnel with the knowledge to inspect plastic pipe applications.

From Welding Inspection to Plastic Pipe Inspection
The CSWIP Welding Inspector to CSWIP Plastic Welding Inspector course provides a progression route for candidates who already hold the relevant welding inspection qualification and want to develop their skills into plastic welding inspection. To book the CSWIP 3.1 Plastic Pipes course, candidates must hold the prerequisite CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector qualification. This provides an established foundation in welding inspection before candidates develop their knowledge of thermoplastic pipe welding and inspection.
TWI's CSWIP Welding Inspector training covers the responsibilities of a welding inspector, welding processes, typical weld defects, materials, weldability, heat treatment, visual inspection, testing techniques, codes and standards, and inspection reporting. Candidates develop the ability to set up and report inspections and assess welds against specified acceptance levels.
For those earlier in the welding inspection pathway, the CSWIP Visual Welding Inspector course provides an entry point into visual welding inspection. It covers visual inspection procedures, welding processes and defects, weld measurements, inspection reporting, documentation, codes and standards, and assessment against specified acceptance criteria. Together, these qualifications can provide a foundation for professionals looking to progress into specialist plastic welding inspection.
Developing Plastic Welding Inspection Capability
Plastic pipe systems are used across a range of applications, including water, gas and chemical transportation, as well as industrial and construction applications. TWI's plastic welding training is designed for personnel working across sectors including oil and gas, chemicals, power, automotive, aerospace and construction. The CSWIP Plastic Visual Welding Inspector course is specifically designed for those wishing to carry out visual inspections of plastic pipe systems. Candidates develop an understanding of thermoplastic pipe materials and the welding techniques used to join them, with practical demonstrations and hands-on tuition covering butt fusion, electrofusion and socket fusion welding of polyethylene and polypropylene pipe.
The course also covers welding imperfections, visual inspection, materials quality assurance, the responsibilities of a visual plastic welding inspector, relevant terminology and health and safety. Candidates develop the ability to understand, identify and report on the visual inspection of welded plastic pipes.
TWI delivers plastic welding and inspection training from its Plastic Welding Training Centre in Middlesbrough, as well as at customer premises worldwide. The wider programme includes basic, refresher and advanced training, with courses that can be tailored to specific applications and requirements.
