Jack McGuinness: Building a future in engineering
Jack McGuinness has been working for Westinghouse’s Springfields site, in Lancashire since leaving school and taking up his welding and fabrication apprenticeship around 8 years ago.
Having already gained a HNC and a degree while on day release, he works as an area mechanical engineer but is now training to become an Incorporated and, eventually, a Chartered Engineer.
Having had a love for science, technology, engineering and mathematics since school, Jack chose to work towards the EWF/IIW diploma with TWI as it is the highest qualification recognised by the International Institute of Welding.
As part of his study, Jack decided to spend a week at TWI Training in Cambridge, where he stayed on-site so he could fully focus on his studies, while also being able to speak with others on the same course and take time to revise together in the evenings ahead of their exam.
Jack revealed that he found the lecturers to be good and that, even when they didn’t know the answer to a question immediately, they would go and find the answer.
Keen to recommend TWI as a training provider, he noted the worldwide reputation that TWI has for training.
Hoping to achieve European Welding Engineer/International Welding Engineer by the end of the year, Jack feels this will aid him in his portfolio as he seeks to gain Incorporated Engineer status ahead of gaining more experience and going on to become a Chartered Engineer.
Having already gained a wealth of experience and qualifications, Jack has set a clear career plan for himself.
However, he is far from finished as he remains keen to take up any opportunities that come his way to improve his knowledge, skills and experience and build for the future.
