Launch of new Surface Engineering Apprenticeship in the UK
A new apprenticeship for post-graduate engineers to learn specialised skills related to surface engineering and coatings, heat treatments and surface treatments has been launched by The Surface Engineering Leadership Forum (SELF), of which TWI is a part. Cranfield University in the UK, a fellow SELF team member, is offering this level 7 apprenticeship.
Following the development of a series of apprenticeship standards by the SELF team, this apprenticeship is due to launch in January 2021. This part time course will include taught modules, group and individual projects, and case studies, all followed by an end-point assessment, and will have a duration of 30 months.
It is estimated that much of the work of the apprentices will be completed at their workplace and will take up 20% of their time. A project at the employer’s organisation, such as an individual case study, will be of immediate benefit to businesses.
It is yet to be decided, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, whether the taught sessions will take place at the University or via online distance learning. In both cases, high ranking industry professionals and senior academics will be on-hand and allocate time for group discussion.
The cost of the apprenticeship, £17,000, can be funded via the Apprenticeship Levy. There is also the option for co-investment – this is where the UK Government will pay 95% of the apprenticeship costs, leaving the employer with costs of just £850.
