Magnetic Particle Inspection Training with BGAS-CSWIP at TWI

Magnetic particle inspection is a widely used non-destructive testing method for identifying surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. For inspectors and NDT professionals working across fabrication, weld inspection and in-service inspection, developing practical knowledge of the technique can support effective inspection and quality control.

Today, 14 September 2026, TWI Training and Examination Services is delivering two BGAS-CSWIP Magnetic Particle Inspector courses in the UK, with training taking place in Middlesbrough and Cambridge.

While both courses focus on magnetic particle inspection, candidates can choose between a blended learning route in Middlesbrough and the standard Magnetic Particle Inspector course in Cambridge, providing flexibility for different learning preferences and professional requirements.

Both routes are designed to develop an understanding of magnetic particle testing and its application in inspection.

The BGAS-CSWIP Magnetic Particle Inspector Blended Learning course in Middlesbrough combines online theory with practical classroom training and examination.

Candidates begin by completing their eLearning, which covers both Product Technology and Magnetic Testing Theory. Product Technology introduces common discontinuities and the fundamentals of steel metallurgy, steelmaking, casting, wrought products and welding. The Magnetic Testing Theory element focuses on the principles of magnetic particle testing, magnetisation, detecting media and equipment, inspection techniques and assessing magnetising force and amperage.

Once the online learning is completed, candidates attend two days of practical classroom training before undertaking the certification examination. The blended format allows the theoretical element to be studied at the candidate's own pace before moving into practical application.

The programme includes downloadable course notes, self-assessments, coursework and access to tutor support throughout the online learning phase.

Running alongside the Middlesbrough programme, the BGAS-CSWIP Magnetic Particle Inspector course in Cambridge provides a standard classroom-based training route for candidates looking to develop their knowledge and practical inspection skills. The course covers the principles and application of magnetic particle inspection, including magnetisation techniques, detecting media, equipment and the practical considerations involved in carrying out inspections.

Candidates develop the knowledge required to explain magnetic particle testing principles, perform inspections and produce appropriate instructions and reports. The training is aligned with the relevant CSWIP and PCN requirements and BS EN ISO 9712.

Supporting NDT Capability

Magnetic particle inspection plays an important role in detecting discontinuities that may not be visible during a conventional visual examination. Developing competent personnel who can select appropriate techniques, carry out inspections and accurately report findings is therefore an important part of maintaining inspection and quality standards.
