TWI's CSWIP Plant Inspection Training can lead to a variety of roles in the industry, including Shutdown Inspector, Refinery Inspector, Boiler Inspector, Pressure Vessel Inspector, Insurance Inspector, Engineer Surveyor, Plant Integrity Engineer, Asset Integrity Engineer or Offshore Inspection engineer (OIE).

Whatever role your Plant Inspection knowledge leads you towards, each of them requires an understanding of the technical issues surrounding plant operations and, while most inspections occur during periods of shutdown, non-intrusive inspections are also carried out ahead of shutdowns in order to highlight the areas that need to be prioritised.

Plant Inspectors therefore need to have a sound knowledge of materials and mechanical properties as well as an understanding of welding and weld defects, damage and failure mechanisms, and the various NDT methods available, including their limitations. In addition, plant inspectors should know about erosion and corrosion mechanisms and the methods to mitigate these, including coatings and cathodic protection as well as Risk-Based Inspection (RBI). As Plant Inspector is a senior role, practitioners will also need to be able to produce reports and make decisions within the bounds of the relevant codes and standards.
