Online Phased Array Training and Supervision

Online Phased Array Practical Inspection Training and Supervision using a Robotic Cell (RoboCell)

TWI experts on Phased Array Ultrasonics, on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) training and on Robotics are joining forces and launch a joint industry project (JIP) on remote practical training on Phased Array with the use of Robotic cells.

A JIP is a work programme of mutual interest to a number of organisations each contributing to fund the work. Competency in practical work with high skill content, such as non-destructive testing (NDT), requires that personnel are able to gain experience through access to real world facilities and samples. NDT provides data to assure safety and performance of critical assets across many sectors. In order to comply with international standards such as BS EN ISO 9712, NDT qualifications require a set minimum amount of practical experience pre or post sitting an examination.

TWI held a webinar, ‘Pushing Forward - A New Path in Skills Development,’ dedicated to the topic of enhancing workforce skills through the use of remotely accessed, robotically-enabled distance learning.

On this webinar, TWI demonstrates expertise and proves the technical aspects of this concept. More specifically, a user (Phased Array trainee or inspector) access remotely the Phased Array equipment and a robotic cell and carries out equipment setup, calibration, data acquisition and data analysis.

The benefit of this innovation is to allow trainees or personnel to remotely access physical facilities via telepresence and robotic manipulators regardless of where they are in the world. This would remove the need to travel to sites in order to access expensive training infrastructure as well as providing an expansion of remotely-operated robotic inspection technologies. You can see a recording of the webinar here.

A critical aspect to realising the benefits is gaining industry acceptance and approval by certification bodies, which is the focus of this project.

The objective is to develop a robust, accredited remote/online training environment and system which can be used for practical NDE training.
