Plastics Welding: Skill at the Core of Countless Industries

From chemical tanks and ventilation ducts to fume cupboards and pipe systems, plastics welding plays a critical role in keeping essential infrastructure running. At TWI UK, our Hot Gas and Extrusion Welding courses offers in-depth, practical training in techniques that power a wide range of industries.

A Foundation for Industrial Application

The courses focus on manual welding of thermoplastics such as PVC, PP, PE, and PVDF materials, commonly used in sectors like chemical handling, waste management and air filtration. Whether it’s tank repairs, duct fabrication, or fume cupboard maintenance, the welding methods taught here are directly aligned with real world tasks.

Participants are trained to carry out hot gas welding for intricate or smaller joints, and extrusion welding for larger, thicker sections. The techniques are widely applied in the assembly, installation, and repair of components that must be extremely durable and resistant to corrosion.

For Newcomers and Working Welders alike

This TWI training is designed for:

  • Beginners looking to break into plastics welding
  • Skilled workers needing to perform maintenance or repairs on plastics equipment
  • Those preparing for CSWIP Plastics Welder certification in accordance with the British and European Standard, EN 13067

Through a mix of practical tuition and theoretical understanding, learners will gain the confidence to produce high-quality welds and recognise common faults and imperfections, with a strong emphasis on safety, welding procedures and inspection standards.

A typical course includes:

  1. Equipment setup and correct nozzle use, including PTFE nozzle shaping (for extrusion only)
  2. Joint preparation and defect prevention
  3. Practical welding and fabrication workshop – Hot Gas Speed, Hot Gas Hand and Extrusion welding
  4. Key health and safety procedures and site working
  5. Visual inspection, non-destructive testing methods and mechanical testing of welds
  6. Current standards applicable to plastics fabrication
  7. Identification of different plastic types
  8. Processing of plastics
  9. An introduction to the CSWIP Plastics Welder certification (in accordance with EN13067)

Whether you're building ventilation systems, repairing tanks, or maintaining safety-critical equipment, the skills taught at TWI are already shaping the infrastructure that supports modern life. For more information visit our webpage here.

Certification in Plastics Welding

Our courses can lead to an internationally recognised qualification, which delivers real benefits to the sponsoring company and individuals alike. Furthermore, with the increasing use of thermoplastics in new constructions and repair work, there is a requirement for competent individuals to undertake welding of plastics work, as well as for personnel who can inspect and confirm the quality of the work carried out.

TWI offers certification aligned to the British and European standard for approved testing of plastics welders (BS EN 13067), via the internationally recognised CSWIP Scheme for Personnel (CSWIP). Available examination categories of certification can be found in the CSWIP Plastic Welder Scheme document, CSWIP-PW-6-96.
