Q&A with Quality Technician, Dean Burini
Dean Burini is currently working as a Quality Technician for the Welding Development Centre. He recently took the CSWIP Welding Inspector training package (30 Jan – 3 Feb) with us at TWI Middlesbrough.
We got to interview Dean about his experience of the training and how he thinks it will help him in his work.
Delving into the conversation, Dean told us that he works as a contractor for the Welding Development Centre, based at Hitachi Rail, where he mainly does dye penetrant testing and visual inspection of the on the trains. “I mainly inspect the structural welds on the car body structure,” he explained.
Elaborating more regarding his work, Dean said that he enjoys working for the Welding Development Centre as they have given him lots of good opportunities to improve his knowledge with respect to welding, especially since he had not worked with aluminium before. Having got to know multiple ways in which aluminium is welded, Dean noted, “I have a good work/life balance because I work 40 hours a week with no obligation/pressure to work overtime, but I can if I want to.”
Dean took the CSWIP 3.1 course with us, having previously taken CSWIP 3.0 and feeling ready for the next step. He found the CSWIP 3.1 content easy to follow, since he had completed a welding apprenticeship a few years ago that gave him a good welding background.
Upon being asked how he found the in-person learning experience, Dean said, “I had Stephen as the lecturer and he was great. He had lots of stories to help us remember important course content, which was a massive help, especially because I’m dyslexic so I find just reading information doesn’t quite stick.”
He is now considering going on to take UT 3.1 and 3.1 and aims to start working for a diploma in Welding Engineering but, as for training at TWI, Dean said, “I highly recommend it, it was a seamless process with results within days with great lecturer.”
