Q&A with TWI UK Programme Manager David Bage
Hi David, can you start by letting us know a bit about your background?
I originally started my career as an apprentice welder, then I became a welding instructor, before becoming a welding engineer. Later on, I started to teach as a high school teacher eventually becoming a lecturer at a technical college, before joining TWI.
Can you tell us a bit more about your experience?
I have worked in the oil and gas industry, the transport sector and in the telecommunications industry. Working in different industries and sectors widened my range of experience with respect to different manufacturing methods, materials and welding processes.
How do you find it working as a Programme Manager?
It can be really hectic! You have to try and predict what could happen in the future; forecasting and planning is the key.
Which department are you heading currently at TWI?
I’m the manager of the welding training workshop, welding inspection and the engineering diploma at TWI.
What made you decide to take this particular role?
I had previously attended several courses at TWI and was really impressed with the organisation. This led me to join and become an integral part of it.
What do you enjoy about your job?
No two days are the same and that makes it very interesting!
How do you see TWI training progressing in the future?
I see the use of technology as the future for TWI training, whether it is more online courses or blended learning. We have been successful in what we have produced online and it has given us a new way to reach our clients, although the traditional way of teaching will remain too.
