Seeing the Detail: The Role of Visual Testing in NDT

Last week, TWI Training delivered its Visual Testing (VT) course in Middlesbrough, providing candidates with structured training in visual inspection techniques, equipment and practical inspection methodology.

The course forms part of TWI Training's Conventional NDT Methods programme and is designed for professionals who require a practical understanding of visual inspection and its role within the wider NDT process.

Effective visual testing involves more than simply looking for visible defects. The course covers the fundamentals of vision and light, visual inspection equipment and the factors that can influence the reliability of an inspection. Candidates also explore product technology covering areas such as welding, casting and forging, before applying their knowledge through practical inspection methodology. This course also considers inspection requirements associated with weld repair and heat treatment, helping candidates understand the wider factors that can influence the condition and assessment of engineering components.

Where does VT fit within NDT

Visual inspection has an important place within the broader NDT process. Understanding how visual testing relates to other NDT methods can help inspection personnel recognise potential problem areas and understand when further examination may be appropriate. Through this specifically curated course, candidates develop an understanding of the role of visual inspection in relation to NDT, alongside the ability to utilise a range of visual inspection equipment.

TWI's Visual Testing course is delivered in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and covers the syllabus requirements for CSWIP Level 2. The course concludes with the relevant certification examination. For candidates pursuing PCN certification, prior product technology knowledge is also a requirement under ISO 9712:2022. TWI's course information notes that Product Technology training is mandatory for new PCN candidates. The training is particularly relevant to inspection engineers, technicians, NDT operators and surveyors who need knowledge of visual inspection techniques, likely problem areas and inspection methodology.
