Starting the Week Strong: CSWIP 3.1U in Middlesbrough
Starting this week in Middlesbrough with the CSWIP 3.1U – NDT Inspection Diver Package, beginning today, 28 September, at TWI Training. The specialist programme is designed for commercial divers looking to develop the inspection knowledge and practical skills required for underwater NDT inspection.
Underwater inspection requires more than commercial diving ability. Inspectors need to combine their diving experience with the technical knowledge, inspection techniques and recording skills needed to produce reliable information from subsea environments. The CSWIP 3.1U programme provides structured training in a range of underwater inspection techniques, including:
- General underwater and close visual inspection
- Underwater video and photography
- Cathodic protection measurements
- Ultrasonic digital thickness measurement
- Practical subsea inspection techniques
Candidates receive theoretical instruction based on the CSWIP-approved syllabus alongside practical training, allowing them to develop their understanding in an environment designed around underwater inspection activities.
The course and examination package provides candidates with a structured route towards the CSWIP 3.1U examination. Successful candidates can gain CSWIP certification subject to meeting the relevant certification and examination requirements.
CSWIP's underwater inspection scheme provides a route from the foundational 3.1U qualification towards more advanced underwater inspection responsibilities, with further specialist pathways including CSWIP 3.2U – NDT Inspection Diver, 3.3U – ROV Inspector and 3.4U – Underwater Inspection Controller.
For commercial divers developing their careers in subsea and offshore inspection, 3.1U can therefore provide an important foundation for building inspection capability and considering future professional development.
Training in Middlesbrough
Practical training is an important part of developing confidence in underwater inspection. At TWI Training's Middlesbrough facility, candidates can develop inspection techniques within a dedicated diving environment, working with the types of equipment and inspection activities relevant to subsea work. The current programme begins today, 28 September 2026, bringing another group of candidates into TWI Training's underwater inspection programme.
Further CSWIP 3.1U courses are scheduled for 5 October, 26 October and 23 November in Middlesbrough, providing additional opportunities for commercial divers looking to undertake this specialist training.
For those who already hold the relevant 3.1U qualification and are looking to develop their knowledge of advanced underwater NDT techniques, the CSWIP 3.2U – NDT Inspection Diver programme provides a further progression route, with upcoming Middlesbrough courses from 12 October and 2 November.
