TWI Expands Plastic Welding Training with Sheet Fusion Kit

TWI Training has added new specialist equipment to its Middlesbrough training facility, opening further opportunities for plastic fabrication training and future course development.

A brand-new 1.5m sheet butt fusion welding machine has been donated to TWI by Ingenia GmbH in collaboration with Barnes Plastic Welding Equipment Limited.

The new machine represents an important addition to TWI's plastic welding training capability and will support the development of training in sheet butt fusion welding — an area of plastic fabrication that requires specialist equipment and technical knowledge. TWI already offers a range of plastic welding and plastic welding inspection courses, covering areas including butt fusion, socket fusion and electrofusion, hot gas and extrusion welding, lining membranes, and plastic pipe inspector courses. Training is delivered from TWI's UK facility in Middlesbrough, as well as on-site for companies where required.

The addition of the new sheet butt fusion machine creates another opportunity to build on this existing provision.

For plastic welding professionals, this means the potential to develop your skills using modern, industry-relevant equipment within a specialist training environment. For employers, it adds another area of plastic fabrication that can be explored as part of workforce development and technical training.

What's in store at TWI?

The machine has already been installed at TWI, with initial test welds being carried out during its handover to ensure the equipment was operating as expected and ready for use. TWI is now able to use the machine to support training development in sheet butt fusion welding, with future CSWIP certification provision also being explored. For anyone working across plastic fabrication, welding or inspection, this is an area worth keeping an eye on.

As TWI continues to expand its plastic welding training capabilities, the new equipment is another step towards providing learners with access to specialist technology and training opportunities that reflect the needs of industry.
