TWI launched a new concept for the Radiographic Interpretation (RI) course
Based on the demands of industry, the radiographic interpretation training was revised
to include a new delivery concept. Following a series of successful pilot courses,
the new model has now launched worldwide.
The training is focused on practical knowledge, with tasks designed to simulate
real-life industrial conditions. Both specific and practical parts of the training
are based on real written procedures and the requirements of EN ISO standards, including
acceptance criteria. A significant portion of the training time is dedicated to
the practical sessions.
Each practical session consists of time for individual work followed by a moderated
discussion on results and experience. At the beginning of the session, all the students
are provided with an identical set of radiographs. All students work on the same
task alongside an experienced lecturer who is there to offer advice. Additional
guidance is provided by extensive sets of multiple-choice questions, which address
the key areas of the radiographs and lead students through the interpretation process.
Each practical session is finished by a moderated discussion. Both correctly completed
reports and correct answers to the questions are presented, explained and discussed
within group.
The main goals of the training are to build confidence in individuals in order for
them to make qualified decisions, as well as to provide guidance on the use of acceptance
criteria and, in general, nurture the right practical habits which industry expects
from professional radiographic interpreters.
During the pilot training the feedback obtained from students was positive, with
many of the candidates highlighting the practical elements of the course as being
the most popular aspect. While there is a lot to learn, candidates expressed how
the radiographs offer a ‘good range of scenarios’ to work through.
One candidate explained that the course provides ‘a wide range of knowledge in a
clear, constructive manner so that it could be understood with ease,’ while another
revealed how the lecturer, ‘helped whenever anyone in the class struggled.’
With the training matching the specifications of EN ISO 9712, its content complies
with the syllabus requirements of CSWIP and PCN. You can find out more about this
