TWI Supports Leco Marine on Extrusion Welding
At the end of May, boatbuilder Leco Marine welcomed TWI trainers to its Alness facility for a focused programme designed to enhance both technical knowledge and industry-recognised competence. Over the course (28–29 May), six members of staff took part in a training and certification course in extrusion welding of polyethylene sheet, delivered in accordance with EN13067 standards. For Leco Marine, which specialises in building high-density polyethylene (HDPE)boats, the initiative was about more than just training. It was a chance to formally demonstrate their capability in a niche but growing area of marine manufacturing.
Training with a Purpose
The programme combined theory with practical exercises, ensuring participants gained a complete grounding in the discipline. From understanding plastics and joint symbols to extrusion welding procedures, destructive and non-destructive testing, and visual inspection of welded systems; the course covered every stage of the process. Health and safety also played a central role, with candidates completing their CSCS exam alongside the welding training.
Certified Success
The outcome was a resounding success: all six participants passed both the theoretical and practical examinations, achieving CSWIP Certification, in accordance with BS EN13067, in Category 3.2, extrusion welding of polyethylene sheet. This certification not only equips the team with new technical skills but also provides Leco Marine with formal recognition of their ability to deliver safe, high-quality welding on HDPE boats.
Raising Standards in Boat building
By investing in its people, Leco Marine has reinforced its commitment to quality and innovation. The new skills gained will support the company’s ambition to grow its HDPE boatbuilding capabilities while offering customers confidence that every vessel is built to rigorous international standards.
A representative from Leco Marine, David Skea, summed it up best: “The programme and certification with TWI will insure industry have the confidence in our products that we do and has given our staff a recognised qualification proving the high level of care they put into their work.”
This training is another example of how organisations are working with TWI to strengthen their teams, gain recognised certification, and stay competitive in specialised industries.
