TWI Training Offers Flexible Routes to Penetrant Testing

TWI Training and Examination Services is continuing to offer flexible routes for professionals developing their non-destructive testing (NDT) skills, with Penetrant Testing (PT) training available through both traditional classroom delivery and a blended learning format.

The latest PT courses ran simultaneously in Cambridge and Middlesbrough from 7 September 2026, bringing candidates together for practical, instructor-led training at two TWI locations. Further opportunities are available through the Penetrant Testing Blended Learning Package, combining self-paced online study with practical classroom training and examination.

The range of delivery options reflects the different ways that today's NDT professionals may choose to develop their technical knowledge and work towards certification.

Combining theory with practical NDT expertise

Penetrant Testing is a widely used NDT method for detecting surface-breaking discontinuities in welds, castings and wrought products. TWI's PT training is suitable for NDT personnel, inspectors and technicians involved in fabrication or in-service inspection across a range of industrial sectors.

The classroom PT course combines theoretical instruction with practical exercises, covering the principles of penetrant inspection, materials and equipment, compatibility, safety and methods for assessing sensitivity. Candidates also develop practical experience with solvent-removable, water-washable and post-emulsifiable penetrant processes.

Training is delivered in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and concludes with written and practical testing. Candidates can develop the knowledge and practical skills required to meet the relevant CSWIP and PCN Level 2 syllabus requirements. TWI also provides free pre-course eLearning when booking the conventional PT course, helping candidates prepare for their classroom training.

A blended approach for greater flexibility

For professionals who want to complete more of the theoretical learning in their own time, the Penetrant Testing Blended Learning course provides an alternative route. The online element separates theoretical learning from practical application, allowing candidates to study the material at their own pace before attending two days of practical classroom training at a TWI facility, followed by the certification examination.

The eLearning programme covers two main areas: Product Technology and Penetrant Testing Theory. Candidates explore subjects including common discontinuities, steel metallurgy, steelmaking, casting, wrought products and welding before progressing into the principles and processes of penetrant testing, penetrant systems, inspection and control checks.

The availability of both classroom and blended learning options allows candidates and employers to select an approach that fits their training needs, existing experience and preferred way of learning.

Following the September classroom courses in Cambridge and Middlesbrough, further Penetrant Testing and PT blended learning training opportunities are scheduled throughout the coming months.

For professionals looking to develop or strengthen their penetrant testing capability, TWI's range of delivery options provides opportunities to combine structured technical learning with practical experience and internationally recognised certification routes.

Note: Downloadable course notes, self-assessment questionnaires, coursework and tutor support are included within the online element. Candidates complete the online assessments before attending the practical element, allowing classroom time to focus on applying the method.
