TWI Training UK at Advancing Skills Members’ Event

TWI Training UK took part in The Welding Institute’s Professional Members’ Event, Advancing Skills for Manufacturing and Inspection, which was held on 10 June 2025 at TWI’s Technology Centre in Middlesbrough.

The event brought together Professional Members of The Welding Institute and TWI Industrial Members for a full day of technical presentations, workshops, and networking activities, all focused on the future of skills and professional development in engineering, manufacturing, and inspection.

Representatives from TWI Training UK were pleased to contribute to the day’s activities, which included a series of insightful talks from colleagues across TWI. Interim Associate Director of Training and Examinations, Stephen Wisniewski, shared updates on training initiatives and the importance of maintaining robust standards across education and certification. Welding Inspection Programme Manager, David Bage, also took part, helping to highlight how structured training pathways continue to support career progression for professionals across industry.

TWI Training presented informal testimonies from Skills Boot Camp participants and their experiences, underlining the positive impact of practical, employer-aligned training. Attendees also engaged with live demonstrations, including phased array ultrasonic testing and plastic welding, showcasing the hands-on techniques central to TWI’s training delivery.

The event featured external contributions from Jamie Cater of Make UK, Richard Humphreys of Norton Projects, and Don Atkinson, President of the Teesside Branch of The Welding Institute, who each addressed the evolving skills landscape and the importance of attracting and retaining talent in the sector. Their insights complemented TWI Training UK’s mission to equip learners with the knowledge and qualifications they need to thrive in a competitive and technical environment.

There were insightful discussions identifying the skill gaps in industry and how TWI Training, The Welding Institute and TWI can address the issue alongside our industry partners. The day concluded with interactive workshops, a dive tank tour, and a light-hearted chocolate welding demonstration—adding an engaging, memorable touch to a well-rounded event.
