Is it for me?

Candidates with a basic understanding of 3D printing additive manufacturing at a novice to intermediate level, for technicians, engineers, managers, scientists etc.

This three-day course is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI) - a programme to improve the global competitiveness of UK advanced manufacturing supply chains . Places are limited and are expected to be very popular so early registration is advised.

What will I learn?

The three-day course covers the following topics:

  • Introduction to Additive Manufacturing (AM) - overview, comparison with other AM processes, advantages and disadvantages of Selective Laser Melting (SLM)
  • SLM benefits and applications
  • SLM process - process description, end-to-end process chain, process hardware, current/future technology developments
  • Metal powders for AM - production, characterisation of metal powders, powder management, handling and safety issues
  • SLM safety issues
  • SLM risk and safety assessment exercise
  • Topology optimisation
  • Design for AM
  • SLM process build optimisation
  • SLM material build parameter optimisation
  • Post processing operations
  • Inspection, metrology and NDT -  geometric conformity, defect detection etc.
  • AM process certification and verification - AM standards, process, facility and component certification
  • SLM cost analysis
  • SLM case study
  • Practical demonstration of SLM machines

Note: The course will not cover machine operation or hands-on operator training. If this is required, please contact us.

What will I leave with?

To equip the attendee with an appreciation of the SLM process. This will include an understanding of the advantages and limitations of SLM, the associated equipment and hardware and the end-to-end manufacturing process chain, including metal powders, component design and optimisation, derivation of SLM process parameters, post processing, cost issues and the certification and validation of SLM components.
