Is it for me?

Project engineers, design engineers and design draughtsmen, and all technical staff who require an understanding of the influence of design in production of acceptable welded fabrications.

What will I learn?

This course will teach you about the welded joint, terminology, steps for successful design, and features of welding processes. You will also learn about edge preparations, weld symbols, residual stress and distortion, defects, weldability, and the strength of welded joints. The course will also cover calculation of weld size for static loading, material selection and process control to avoid brittle fracture, design exercises, assessment of the relative fatigue life of welds, and fatigue life improvement methods.

This course reviews the terminology and explains concisely the basic principles of effective welding design.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Recognise how welding imposes limitations on design
  • Appreciate the importance of weldability problems in materials selection
  • Design a welded joint to provide adequate access for a given process
  • Make static stress assessments
  • Understand fatigue behaviour of welded joints
  • Select materials to avoid brittle fracture
