Building Ultrasonic Testing Skills Through Blended Learning

This week, TWI Training welcomed candidates to Cambridge for the ongoing Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – Welds course, which began on 1 June and continues through to 17 June 2026.

Ultrasonic testing remains one of the most widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for examining welded joints, helping inspectors and technicians identify imperfections while maintaining the integrity of the component under inspection. As industries continue to demand high levels of quality assurance and safety, the need for skilled UT personnel remains as important as ever.

The course brings together both theoretical understanding and practical application, introducing candidates to the principles of ultrasonic testing before developing their ability to apply the technique in real inspection scenarios. Topics covered include the behaviour of sound in materials, equipment operation, weld scanning techniques, defect detection and reporting.

One of the strengths of the programme is the availability of blended learning options. Through TWI's Learning Hub, candidates can complete key theory modules online before attending classroom-based, practical training. This approach allows learners to study fundamental concepts at their own pace and at a time that suits them, helping them arrive at the training centre better prepared for hands-on activities and instructor-led sessions.

By separating theoretical learning from practical application, blended learning provides greater flexibility while still leading towards the same internationally recognised qualification pathway. For many working professionals, this offers an effective way to balance training commitments alongside day-to-day responsibilities.

As the course progresses over the coming weeks, candidates will develop their understanding of ultrasonic inspection techniques and gain valuable experience in the assessment of welded joints. These are skills that support quality, safety and reliability across a wide range of engineering sectors.
