Developing Underwater Inspection Skills with CSWIP Training
Underwater inspection plays an important role in assessing the condition and integrity of subsea assets. For commercial divers working in this specialist field, developing inspection knowledge and maintaining technical competence are important parts of professional development.
TWI Training offers the CSWIP 3.1U and 3.2U NDT Inspection Diver programmes for divers looking to develop their underwater inspection capabilities, from visual inspection and measurement techniques to more advanced underwater non-destructive testing (NDT).
With further training opportunities scheduled at TWI’s Middlesbrough facility in October and November, commercial divers can explore the next step in their professional development.
Building skills for underwater inspection
The CSWIP 3.1U – NDT Inspection Diver course introduces the principles and practical techniques used in underwater inspection. The programme covers general and close visual inspection, recording findings through video and photography, cathodic protection measurements, and ultrasonic digital thickness measurements. These skills support the systematic inspection and recording of subsea assets, helping inspection personnel develop the technical knowledge required for this specialist area of work.
For divers who already hold the relevant CSWIP 3.1U qualification, the CSWIP 3.2U – NDT Inspection Diver course offers a progression into advanced underwater NDT techniques. Training includes magnetic particle inspection, weld toe grinding and an overview of electromagnetic techniques.
Both programmes combine theoretical instruction with practical learning and assessment, helping candidates develop their understanding of underwater inspection methods. Entry requirements apply, including a current CSWIP 3.1U certificate for the 3.2U programme.
The value of recognised inspection qualifications
Inspection professionals work in an industry where technical knowledge, consistent methods and the ability to assess and record findings are essential. Recognised qualifications can help demonstrate professional competence and support career development across the inspection sector.
Watch the video below to explore the importance of global recognition in inspection certification and what this can mean for professionals working in the industry.
A career built on continuous learning
Underwater inspection is a specialist field that continues to develop alongside inspection technologies, industry requirements and the demands placed on subsea assets. Professional development therefore extends beyond gaining an initial qualification: maintaining and expanding technical knowledge is an ongoing part of an inspection career.
In this second video, TWI’s Programme Manager shares a personal perspective on the inspection profession, reflecting on career development, the changing industry and the importance of continuous learning.
These perspectives complement formal training by highlighting the wider professional context in which technical skills are applied. For inspection divers considering their next step, they also offer an opportunity to reflect on how further training can contribute to their development.
