Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – Welds Course at Capacity

Demand for ultrasonic testing training continues as TWI Training and Examination Services (TES) delivers its latest Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – Welds course in Middlesbrough this October.

Running from 5 to 23 October 2026, the course is now full to capacity, reflecting continued interest in developing practical and technical expertise in ultrasonic testing of welded joints.

Designed for testers, inspectors, engineers and surveyors, the course provides a thorough introduction to the principles and application of ultrasonic testing for welds. Candidates explore the generation and detection of sound, how sound behaves within materials, the use of flaw detectors and angled beam probes, welding processes and common weld defects.

Practical learning is an important part of the programme, with exercises using test specimens containing simulated flaws, alongside examination of parent plate and butt welds. Candidates also develop skills in instruction writing and the practical application of ultrasonic testing techniques.

By the end of the course, candidates should be able to calibrate ultrasonic equipment, measure steel plate thickness and attenuation, locate and evaluate laminations, select appropriate probes for examining welded butt joints, and report on the location and size of defects. The course also covers interpretation of code requirements and meets the syllabus requirements for PCN/CSWIP Levels 1 and 2.

The direct access Level 2 training course meets the 120-hour training requirement for BS EN ISO 9712 certification, with Level 1 training and examination also available within the Level 2 course where required.

Next course in Cambridge

For those who were unable to secure a place on the fully booked Middlesbrough course, the next Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – Welds course is scheduled to take place in Cambridge from 9 to 27 November 2026.

With ultrasonic testing remaining an important method for examining welded components and identifying defects, the course provides candidates with a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to support their development in NDT.
