Is it for me?

This course is designed for you as an experienced Level 2 qualified ultrasonic technicians looking to expand their knowledge and gain a qualification in phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), but have limited time to attend a full-time classroom course.

This eLearning training is part of the ‘blended learning’ PAUT package; a mix of eLearning and in-class practical training followed by certification to BS EN ISO 9712. The online modules can be studied when and where it is most convenient and at your own pace.

The package separates the learning of key concepts from the learning of a specific instrument, coupled with interactive exercises focused on the principles behind set-up, calibration, acquisition and data analysis. An intuitive logical training structure, which invariably helps the students understand key concepts, step-by-step.

In addition to the eLearning element of the phased array training, 10 days classroom attendance will consist of: 5 days phased array data acquisition, 3 days data analysis, 2 days examination.

Note for candidates wishing to enrol on a course which includes blended learning:  It is a mandatory requirement to issue access to the online material no less than 30 DAYS prior to the commencement of the in-class element of the course. There shall be no exception to this requirement, please plan your study to embrace this requirement.

What will I learn?

eLearning:
The eLearning aspect of the course is broken down into 6 modules, as follows:

  • Module 1: Basic Principles of Ultrasound and Ultrasound Testing
  • Module 2: Principles Underlying Phased Array Ultrasound
  • Module 3: Beam Steering in Phased Array Ultrasound
  • Module 4: Beam Focussing In Phased Array Ultrasound
  • Module 5: Optimizing Data Quality
  • Module 6: Review

Classroom:
The classroom aspect of this blended course will teach you about practical application of phased array for weld inspection, inspection design, instrument configuration, calibration and data acquisition. You will also cover multi-group inspection, data analysis and reporting.

Typical equipment used on the course includes Olympus Omniscan, TD Focus Scan, Sonatest Harfang, Zetec Topaz, M2M Gekko equipment. If you require specific equipment, please contact us to confirm the equipment that will be used for the event.

The training is in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and concludes with the certification examination.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the theoretical background of phased array applications
  • Correctly select probe/wedge to examine welded butt joints
  • Calibrate and set up the phased array ultrasonic equipment
  • Locate and evaluate flaws in the weld body, HAZ, and parent metal lamination
  • Analyse scan data for location and size of defects in typical welded butt joints
  • Accurately report weld condition
  • Differentiate defects from geometric features
  • Compile a written instruction
  • Meet the CSWIP syllabus requirements

We would like to bring to your notice that TWI India and TWI South East Asia have decided to withdraw ATO of BINDT. Hence, they will not be in a position to undertake any PCN courses or exams.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates with previous training in Phased Array UT may be eligible for a reduction of the total training hours required for CSWIP certification. Please contact Customer Services for further information. Candidates are to provide evidence of the training received: a certificate of attendance and a copy of the training syllabus BOTH authenticated by a senior responsible person in the candidates employing organisation or a major client. This shall be passed to the relevant TWI Training Centre for approval at least two weeks prior to the scheduled course start date.

This course leads to an internationally recognised CSWIP certification, fully compliant with BS EN ISO 9712 certification schemes.

PCN candidates must be qualified to a minimum of BS EN ISO 9712 Level 2 Ultrasonic Testing.

CSWIP candidates should be qualified to a minimum of BS EN ISO 9712.

CSWIP certification is available for candidates holding ASNT UT Welds. It will be considered on an individual basis and evidence of training and experience presented to the training centre on application. Additionally, holders of ASNT UT Welds qualification will be required to sit the CSWIP UT Welds Level 2 General Paper.

Please note:
Inspectors who do not hold BS EN ISO 9712 Level 2 certification in ultrasonic inspection are required to view the CSWIP document

The minimum required duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is:

  • Level 1 - 80 hours
  • Level 2 - 40 hours (Direct Level 2 - 104 hours for CSWIP and 120 hours for PCN)

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is:

  • Level 1 - 3 months for CSWIP - 1 month for PCN
  • Level 2 - 3 months (Direct Level 2 - 6 months for CSWIP - 4 months for PCN)

In addition to the eLearning element of the phased array training, 10 days classroom attendance will consist of: 5 days phased array data acquisition, 3 days data analysis, 2 days exam.
