Is it for me?

This course is suitable for individuals with ultrasonic testing experience, who are looking to expand their knowledge into advanced ultrasonic applications and gain a qualification in Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD).

If time is an issue, please consider our blended learning option - study theory and concepts when and where you choose, then join the classroom sessions for hands-on practical.

What will I learn?

This course covers ToFD theory and principles of diffraction, ToFD hardware (pulsers, receivers, motor control, encoders), ToFD data acquisition and interpretation, ToFD techniques, and ToFD applications. You will also learn about equipment selection, calibration and optimisation, optimising PCS and angles, flaw location and sizing, limitations of detection and resolution, codes and standards, and reporting.

The training is in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9712 and ends with the certification examination.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the theoretical background and limitations of ToFD applications
  • Correctly select probe/wedge to examine welded butt joints
  • Calibrate and set up the ToFD ultrasonic equipment
  • Locate and evaluate flaws in the weld body and HAZ
  • Differentiate defects from geometric features
  • Analyse scan data for location and size of defects in typical welded butt joints
  • Understand and apply digital processing processes (SAFT, linearization, averaging, filters etc)
  • Compile written instructions
  • Meet the CSWIP and PCN syllabus requirements

What else should I know?

Please note:
All candidates attending a examination (initial, retest or renewal) must provide photo ID (e.g driving licence number, passport number, PCN ID card) on the day of sitting the examination. Failure to do so will result in the candidate being turned away.

PCN in India and South East Asia
We would like to bring to your notice that TWI India and TWI South East Asia have decided to withdraw ATO of BINDT. Hence, they will not be in a position to undertake any PCN courses or exams.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

ISO 9712:2022, the standard to which the PCN Scheme operates with respect to NDT certification, now requires that all candidates demonstrate a prior understanding of materials and processes, also known as 'product technology', before undertaking training in any method in order to supplement their knowledge of the specific methods and techniques to which they are seeking certification.
To meet this requirement, BINDT developed the Product Technology training course to help PCN candidates achieve the required materials and processes knowledge in an affordable and convenient way and at a time and pace that suits them.
The course is mandatory for all new PCN candidates https://www.bindt.org/Certification/product-technology-online-training/

Important Note: Whilst not a formal prerequisite, it is highly recommended that candidates have some prior industrial exposure to the method itself as well as to the sector that they will be attempting (e.g. welds). Where this is not possible, candidates are advised to thoroughly review the course notes and complete the relevant product technology e-learning (and methods e-learning where this is available) prior to attending the classroom training.

This preparation will significantly ease their study during the classroom sessions and improve their chances of successfully passing the examinations.

PCN candidates must be qualified to a minimum of BS EN ISO 9712 Level 2 Ultrasonic Testing.

CSWIP candidates should be qualified to a minimum of BS EN ISO 9712.

CSWIP certification is also available for candidates holding ASNT UT Welds. It will be considered on an individual basis and evidence of training and experience presented to the training centre on application. Non-BS EN ISO 9712 certificate holders will be required to sit the CSWIP UT Welds Level 2 General Paper.

Please note:  Inspectors who do not hold BS EN ISO 9712 Level 2 certification in ultrasonic inspection are required to view the CSWIP document

Training requirements:

The minimum required duration of training, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, is:

  • Level 1 - 40 hours
  • Level 2 - 40 hours (Direct Level 2 - 80 hours)

Certification requirements:

The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is:

  • Level 1 - 1 month for CSWIP - 3 months for PCN
  • Level 2 - 3 months for CSWIP (Direct Level 2: 4 months) - 9 months for PCN (Direct Level 2: 12 months)
