Is it for me?

This course is designed for NDT personnel, engineers, surveyors, inspectors, and quality engineers. The courses delivered at TWI Cambridge are also available if you are working in the aerospace industry.

To attend this course, participants must have successfully completed the Basic Radiation Safety Training.

What will I learn?

This course will teach you about welding processes and weld defects, properties of X- and gamma-rays, sensitometry, film selection, film processing and spurious indications. You will also learn about factors controlling contrast and definition, X- and gamma-ray equipment, ionising radiation hazards, regulations, use of screens and filters, selection of angle of aspect, image quality indicators, defect depth location, castings, and reporting.

You will receive training relevant to the examination to be taken covering practical, inspection and theoretical aspects as appropriate.

The training is in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9712 and ends with the certification examination.

What will I leave with?

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the basic theory of X - and gamma radiography
  • Select film type and energy levels, select and prepare techniques for a given specimen
  • State the theory of film processing and carry out practical dark-room work
  • Have a working knowledge of basic radiation safety (see note in Additional Information)
  • Plot and evaluate film characteristics (sensitometry)
  • Recognise film faults
  • Meet the syllabus requirements for CSWIP, PCN Level 2
